Your favorite rappers soda out. The commercialization of Hip Hop continues with Sprite.

Sprite, a Coke a Cola company launched an interesting soda campaign featuring some of your favorite rappers. The campaign is promoting 16 limited Sprite cans with lyric quotes from Drake, Nas, Rakim Allah and Notorious B. I. G. on the cans. So Lets break it down.

Drake:
Although he is the most current rapper in these advertisements we can’t even believe the Sprite Marketing team would have the guts to position Aubrey Graham as though he is the top rapper ever. Sorry Sprite but this Jewish actor from Degrassi didn’t start from the bottom and he still not there lyrically to be in the same sentence as Rakim, Nas, or Notorious B. I. G..

The way Sprite positioned the campaign, it appears to any youngsta that Drake is the king of Hip Hop…and he’s not. #1 rap songs don’t make you the king considering radio programers basically know nothing about the culture and are influenced by guess who…Sprite advertisement money. This is wack on too many levels.

Nas:
The Homie from Queens is definitely a lyrical genius and rightly so, but have you ever looked at Nas?…he looks like he doesn’t age. Drinking Sprite or any soda will not prolong your beauty or increase your rhyme skill. It will only make you a funky diabetic. Go ask Phife dawg. Nas told us he was highly influenced by Rakim so we are sure Nas didn’t know his name would go in front of his mentor.

Rakim:
Hey Sprite his name is actually Rakim Allah…but we’re sure that didn’t go well with the campaign. We all followed the leader because he took the average party nursery type rhymes of the early 80’s and created his brand of prophetic / scientific / strong black male / five percent inspired / positive / Langston Hughes type lyrics to the masses. He should never be on the bottom of any hip hop list because he is the God of Hip Hop. Rakim is regarded as one of the most influential and most skilled MCs of all time. The only rapper in this campaign to be nominated for induction into the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame…so tell us again why he is not on the top?

“While thinking of a Master plan,
(Sprite said) we gotta put a can inside his hand…now he’s paid in full (echo).”

Notorious B. I. G.
No disrespect but somewhere Biggie’s Mom is cashing a fat check with no idea of the effects of this campaign. Somebody please tell Ms. Voletta Wallace don’t let them sell diabetes to black youth with your son’s legacy.

Lastly, all soda is BAD…not Michael Jackson bad, but it will kill you Bad. Don’t drink Sprite or any sugar laced soft drink…obey your thirst by getting something that flows better than any MC… spring or alkaline water (not tap or purified). Peace.

Nation19 new issue: The food Issue.

Whitney Houston’s daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown taken off of life support on the same day Michael Jackson was killed.

Whitney Houston’s daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown has been moved to hospice care after months in hospital. Her aunt Pat Houston said Brown’s condition had worsened.

“Despite the great medical care at numerous facilities, Bobbi Kristina Brown’s condition has continued to deteriorate…as of today, she has been moved into hospice care. We thank everyone for their support and prayers. She is in God’s hands now,” the statement read.

What is strange is this was all done on the 6th year anniversary of the murder of Michael Jackson which is today. What is also strange is that both Whitney Houston and her daughter were both found unconscious in a bathtub three years apart.

If you think we are just sensationalizing all this, check this out. On Jerod Brown’s Facebook page the nephew of Bobby Brown he posted that both Houston and his cousin Bobbi Kristina Brown were preyed upon by those who wanted them dead.

“Auntie Whitney was murdered not drowned. That’s a fact. Now the whole bathroom plot shows up again w/ Bobbi Kristina’s situation. C’mon are you people that bold to try to perform this act again on my family. And the public believes whatever these people put in their faces, i mean it is convincing if you’re not on the inside … Soon evidence will be handed over to assist this investigation.”

Jerod Brown suggests that a family member was responsible for Whitney Houston’s death. He also suggests that Bobbi Kristina never trusted that person or persons.

Pat Houston, Whitney Houston’s sister-in-law and manager, was appointed administrator of the trust fund set up for her Bobbi Kristina. Bobbi is also the daughter of the singer Bobby Brown. He, along with Pat Houston, were appointed her co-guardians.

Why every Rapper should observe Ramadan

A celebrity customer called us and wanted to buy the new Pillars Tee but was kinda worried about rocking it because he wasn’t a Muslim. We explained that although the shirt is made for people observing Ramadan, the significance can be practiced by anyone with a little discipline.

Here is how everyone, even Rappers can observe Ramadan, still stay fresh, and not be Muslim…..of course if you are not Muslim already. lol

Ramadan starts this month on June 17th and will continue for 30 days until or around Friday, the 17th of July.

Faith: Belief in God or a Supreme Being is at the center of all beliefs both ancient and modern. God may go by different names (Allah, Elohim, Jehovah, Tagaloa) but no person should be praised but the Lord of the Universe. So, not praising your favorite sports figure could wait for a month…lol

Prayer
rappers_need ramadan_pray

Prayer:
Since you can’t text God (unless you have Rakim’s cell phone) you must learn to communicate with The Creator. The more you you communicate the better the relationship gets. Muslims perform five prayers a day. Each prayer does not take more than a few minutes to perform. The real science of prayer in all religions is a direct link between the individual and God. During Ramadan you will be praying with Billions of Muslims, Christians, and Hebrews together.

Charity
rappers_need ramadan_charity

Charity:
For 30 days lets try being charitable to the people who might be buying your next single. It’s not about giving money away but you can give a little bit of your time. Volunteer at a shelter or helping children. Remember all things belong to God, and wealth is therefore held by human beings in trust. The original meaning of the word Charity in Arabic is zakat which means both ‘purification’ and ‘growth.’

Fasting
rappers_need ramadan_fasting
Fasting:
Its not just about abstaining from food, drink, sexual and relations during the sunlight hours, but also avoiding lewd TV programs, lewd movies, music with cursing, fighting, and arguing during this time. If that is too hard and your’e just not “bout that life” try going vegetarian and avoiding anything that is toxic to your body and not uplifting your mind. The goal is to be discipline and to grow.

During Ramadan Muslims fast (no eating or drinking) from dawn until sundown, abstaining from food, drink, and sexual relations, yes…really. Facts: Fasting is the best way to cure most sickness, repair vital organs, and is beneficial to health.

Pilgrimage
rappers_need ramadan_weezey

Pilgrimage:
Knowledge of Self is the key to life. During this time pick up a book or magazine about your culture or history and become an expert. If you can, talk to an elder in your family and gain a better perspective about your family history and the ancestors who paved a way for you to be here.

Write about your experience: After showing a little discipline with food, giving charity, studying yourself, no cursing, and avoiding arguments and fights, you may be at a creative high! Put your thoughts in a verse and send it to us (get[at]nation19dotcom) in July and we may pay you to use it in our next film or commercial! … if its dope lol

The People De La Soul Feat Chuck D

The People Feat Chuck D Digital Download

Peace to our family…Plug One, Plug Two and Plug Three for giving a free piece of history by teaming u with Chuck D.

The idea for the song came from a couple of samples, and the track’s vibe is earnest and has a pressing tone to it. The lyrics are commentaries of our struggles and successes, our weaknesses and strengths… the experiences… and trials and tribulations we have faced as human beings, a race, and as individuals. Lyrically Chuck brings a sense of authority and urgency. The power in his voice demands your attention. With Chuck on the track this is a dream come true for us.

Originally “The People” was suppose to drop in June around the same time the Chuck D/Hot 97/Peter Rosenberg situation took place. We chose to hold off and not add fuel to any fires. Our next aim was for a Black Friday release. Coincidentally the Ferguson tragedy took place, and more recently the non-indictment verdict. Somehow this song was destined to be a part of something more than just dropping a joint. We hope it will lend itself to something positive in these difficult times.

Invisible Mexico Exhibit by Nation19 Magazine / APDTA

Invisible Mexico by Hakeem Khaaliq and Nation19 Magazine / APDTA

Check out a sneak peek of our first exhibit entitled “Invisible Mexico” by Nation19 Magazine / APDTA. The exhibit features a wide variety of photos of people, places and cultures of Mexico while spotlighting on the Afro Mexican townships of Costa Chica and Veracruz. Invisible Mexico features the work of Nation19 Creative Director Hakeem Khaaliq and spans many years of researching black and indigenous cultures in Mexico and Central America. The exhibit is a display of 10 selected photos from the book of the same name which will be released in May. After seeing the exhibit, Univision the largest Spanish speaking television network selected Nation19 and Hakeem Khaaliq to co-produce a two part mini documentary special with famed News Anchor and Television reporter Sergio Urquidi. The television special will air in June -July nationally and internationally on Univision.
