Shhhh….how to communicate privately on your phone with WhatsApp

How do you communicate more privately when you know the revolution will not be televised? When we were in China for a month our main form of communication was WhatApp. It allowed us to talk to family, business partners, writers, researchers and friends over Wifi securely and free.

Now this popular phone APP (WhatsApp) has made big news when they announced that they were providing end-to-end encryption for all of their one billion plus members.

This is super dope for people who like privacy like us over at Nation19 Magazine. The best part about this new feature is that WhatsApp users don’t have to do anything in order to take advantage of this new feature.

The first setting that you should enable, therefore, is the one that notifies you if a WhatsApp friend changes their device.

Why would you care? Well, because if someone removes the SIM card from your friend’s phone and uses it in another device, they could impersonate your friend on WhatsApp. Enabling a setting in WhatsApp will give you notice that you may be communicating with a fake imposter.

Here is what you do.
Go to the “Settings” icon at the bottom right of your WhatsApp screen, open up the Account settings area, and turn on the “Show Security Notifications” setting.

Hold on potna…you not finished yet. lol

The next time you are face-to-face with your WhatsApp friend, and you want to increase your WhatsApp security even more, here are the simple steps to do so.

First, make sure that WhatsApp has access to your camera. You may have already allowed this when you installed WhatsApp, but if you did not, it is an easy setting in your Applications area of your phone.

Next, open a conversation with your friend in WhatsApp and then select the person’s name at the top of the conversation. This will open the contact window for that person. Near the bottom of that screen you will see a setting for Encryption.

whatsapp-settings-2

Tap on the encryption field, and you will be presented with a screen that displays a QR code as well as a 60-digit decimal code that represents the contents of that QR code.

whatsapp-tomato-plant

At the bottom of the QR code screen, there is a link that will enable you to scan your friend’s code, and they can do the same for your code. This is why you need to allow camera access in WhatsApp, even if only temporarily.

That is all there is to it. Now, when you communicate with your friend, you can be more confident that they are who they say they are – although, of course, it’s always possible that the person you are speaking to has failed to keep a close eye on their smartphone or has failed to set a strong passcode.

In our view, you should tighten security like this with as many of your WhatsApp friends as possible.

WhatsApp and WeChat (China) are both great app to communicate with end-to-end encryption for all communications to so many people. For those of us who wish to have authenticity when communicating, WhatsApp has gone that extra step to ensure that as well.

Thats whats sup…oops we meant…thats WhatsApp!

How to travel in one of the most dangerous cities in the world and still be fresh.

Colombia is known as the 5th most dangerous country on earth, and Bogotá the capital of the country is labeled one of the most dangerous cities in the world. When you think of Colombia, few people relate the country to coffee, and Chocolate (cacao) but rather drugs, Pablo Escobar, murders, cartel, etc. On the contrary, Bogotá is full of people just like any city and/or state in America, where the rich live in the North and the poor live in the South. One of the differences in these poor areas is that everyone has a business whether it be a makeshift art gallery made from chalk on the ground in the middle of the street to upscale chic local restaurants. Nation19 was in Bogota, Colombia, Medellín, Cartagena and the Caribbean Island of Tierra Bomba shooting the documentary film #WarOnUs with grammy award winner Che Rhymefest Smith (Donda’s House) and speaker Jasiri Smith. The film Directed by Queen Muhammad Ali and Hakeem Khaaliq was screened at the UNGASS2016 a special session of the United Nations to discuss the War on Drugs. The UN gathering on this subject was the first in 20 years.

When we were in Colombia we had to sneak away to keep you up on game to whats really real. One of the similarities to America however is that Colombia is a Capitalist run country. With that being said I would say Bogota, Colombia is like a more tropical Harlem Newyork. Below are some of the good, the bad, and the ugly aspects we found out in Bogota Colombia:

Good: You don’t need to be scared to come to Bogota because of the “zika” virus. If you didn’t know, that is a propaganda scare tactic to get people to run and volunteer to be lab rats for the latest vaccination experiment which by the way actually has the virus in it…

Good: The fruit here in Bogota, Colombia is the best! Its actually like crack lol I wonder if that was the real drug that they found out here lol.
[Bonus] The Fish: Below is a picture of fresh Filet of Bass which looked so good we turned pescatarian for about a week. We made sure that nothing was Tilapia, Catfish or from the Pacific Ocean thanks to our translator and assistant producer, Shahida Muhammad,
nation19_blog_bogota_mondongos

Bad: Not really bad, but bad for you if you don’t speak any Spanish at all. Spanish is the major language spoken here. You will find some english speaking people working at hotels, but very rarely if at all will you find people on the streets that speak English. I suggest traveling with someone who knows the language, or bust out rosetta stone and learn before your trip. You can learn the basics of spanish in about 3 months.

Ugly: The people in Bogota are nice, but as I mentioned it is similar to newyork. Its a big city full of sky scrapers, lots of foot traffic, vehicle traffic, and bumpy roads. So getting around could be tedius if you don’t speak the language. I suggest not taking a taxi. Take a taxi only if its registered (booked directly from the hotel or airport). Most museums in the city are near each other and in walking distance. If you are able to get around by foot, it would be the most convenient and safest along with taking the bus.

Good: There are plenty of vendors down town to get gifts for friends and family.

Bad: Although the people are nice, there is much oppression on the poor in the city. Average monthly income is about $200 a month. In some of the poor areas, petty theft is common especially cell phones. Phones are commonly stolen to resale for cash. So limit your selfie game in poor areas lol,

Good: This is a city full of art and culture. The art displayed all over town through gigantic murals to Graffiti art are heavily influenced by hiphop. There is even a huge mural of Asada Shakur right down town. Art is expressed freely throughout the town. We were told it is the news of the people. Not from mass media. So, much of the art displayed are also political statements.

Good: Many of the bad aspects of the city can be avoided with common sense.

Why every Rapper should observe Ramadan

A celebrity customer called us and wanted to buy the new Pillars Tee but was kinda worried about rocking it because he wasn’t a Muslim. We explained that although the shirt is made for people observing Ramadan, the significance can be practiced by anyone with a little discipline.

Here is how everyone, even Rappers can observe Ramadan, still stay fresh, and not be Muslim…..of course if you are not Muslim already. lol

Ramadan starts this month on June 17th and will continue for 30 days until or around Friday, the 17th of July.

Faith: Belief in God or a Supreme Being is at the center of all beliefs both ancient and modern. God may go by different names (Allah, Elohim, Jehovah, Tagaloa) but no person should be praised but the Lord of the Universe. So, not praising your favorite sports figure could wait for a month…lol

Prayer
rappers_need ramadan_pray

Prayer:
Since you can’t text God (unless you have Rakim’s cell phone) you must learn to communicate with The Creator. The more you you communicate the better the relationship gets. Muslims perform five prayers a day. Each prayer does not take more than a few minutes to perform. The real science of prayer in all religions is a direct link between the individual and God. During Ramadan you will be praying with Billions of Muslims, Christians, and Hebrews together.

Charity
rappers_need ramadan_charity

Charity:
For 30 days lets try being charitable to the people who might be buying your next single. It’s not about giving money away but you can give a little bit of your time. Volunteer at a shelter or helping children. Remember all things belong to God, and wealth is therefore held by human beings in trust. The original meaning of the word Charity in Arabic is zakat which means both ‘purification’ and ‘growth.’

Fasting
rappers_need ramadan_fasting
Fasting:
Its not just about abstaining from food, drink, sexual and relations during the sunlight hours, but also avoiding lewd TV programs, lewd movies, music with cursing, fighting, and arguing during this time. If that is too hard and your’e just not “bout that life” try going vegetarian and avoiding anything that is toxic to your body and not uplifting your mind. The goal is to be discipline and to grow.

During Ramadan Muslims fast (no eating or drinking) from dawn until sundown, abstaining from food, drink, and sexual relations, yes…really. Facts: Fasting is the best way to cure most sickness, repair vital organs, and is beneficial to health.

Pilgrimage
rappers_need ramadan_weezey

Pilgrimage:
Knowledge of Self is the key to life. During this time pick up a book or magazine about your culture or history and become an expert. If you can, talk to an elder in your family and gain a better perspective about your family history and the ancestors who paved a way for you to be here.

Write about your experience: After showing a little discipline with food, giving charity, studying yourself, no cursing, and avoiding arguments and fights, you may be at a creative high! Put your thoughts in a verse and send it to us (get[at]nation19dotcom) in July and we may pay you to use it in our next film or commercial! … if its dope lol

The Clothing Line Commandments: Part 1, The set up

Ever since we started Nation19.com I have received a ton of request from some really cool people needing help on starting a clothing line. Below is A step-by-step booklet for you to get
Your game on track, if your line aint wack. (In my Biggie voice) lol, jk

The Clothing Line Commandments.

A good name is better than Gold
Think of a unique name for your company and register the company, domain and Trademark.
Once you have that perfect name you need to determine the legal structure of your line. Decide which form of ownership is best for you: sole proprietorship, partnership, Limited Liability Company (LLC), corporation, S corporation, nonprofit or cooperative. As you can see there are many types of business structures so do a little research on what works best for you. For Nation19, the umbrella of a LLC (Limited Liability Corporation) worked best for us.

Protect your Neck.
Registering a trademark is a complex legal process that may be overwhelming. If you are not familiar with this process you should consider hiring an attorney. The filing fee for a trademark is $325 in the US. Attorney’s will charge an additional fee for the TEAS search and the registration. For the trademark plan on spending $750 – $1500 depending on the attorney fees. Our Creative director started in fashion by working with The Godfather of Urban fashion, Karl Kani. One of the first things Karl Kani had him do is research on all the bootleggers using his name illegally.

Domain Name (wwww.yourcompanyname.com)
A domain name is the unique name that identifies your website. Stay away from names that are hard to spell, like www.2irnup.net (that’s really a terrible name anyway…lol). Many 4-5 letter names have already been taken years ago so just because you think www.turnup.com is a great name, someone else has probably grabbed that name a long time ago (Actually it’s available for $10,000). Domain names usually cost about $10 a year. Go Daddy is a good place to get a domain name.

Do your research and find good manufactures.
Whatever you do stay away from Zazzle, or Cafe Press.

Design, design, design
If you are NOT a designer hire a quality designer to create your designs.
A good designer and great design can be the difference between celebrities buying your Tee Shirts and wearing it on MTV or just your favorite Uncle wearing your T-Shirts walking around Home Depot only because he just loves you.

Don’t Bite.
Be Original. Inspiration from Nike’s new colors for winter is ok, but making shirts that say Just Do It® will get you in trouble and possibly in jail.

IMPORTANT: You can’t use photos or artwork that is not yours on T-shirts. You must obtain a license from the copyright owner in order to print and sell t-shirts.

Don't Do iT
Don’t Do iT

Set up a real website.
Try and avoid the free websites like http://www.wix.com. This is your window to the world use it wisely.

It’s not all about the Benjamin’s Baby!
Remember It’s a business, so treat it like a business. Most businesses DON’T make a profit for a few years. So don’t quit your day job or drop out of school just yet. This is a marathon…NOT a sprint. Be creative, network, build real relationships and get out to the public.

Don’t be a sellout. Buy something™
To see what Im talking about in action go to www.nation19.com/shop and buy a shirt or snap back. All our store items are all on sale until they’re gone with free shipping.

Stay tuned for part 2 coming soon.
